World Leader in the Cartridge Industry
Ortofon has always been a pioneering company in sound reproduction. Founded in Copenhagen in 1918, Ortofon initially developed technology to add soundtracks to silent movies in the early 1920s. In 1948, the company introduced the first moving coil cartridge. Since then, Ortofon has designed and manufactured over 300 different cartridges, with the latest being the MC Diamond.
Today, Ortofon is recognized as the world leader in phono cartridges. This achievement is the result of combining innovative design, advanced technology, and the highest level of engineering in the audio industry. Key competencies include acoustics, materials technology, and micromechanics. Ortofon's research and manufacturing facilities are based in Denmark, just like Gryphon Audio Designs.
The MC Diamond
The MC Diamond model represents the pinnacle of Moving Coil cartridges. It features a diamond cantilever and Ortofon Replicant 100 diamond, offering unparalleled transparency, speed, and responsiveness… But the world has
changed!
Black Diamond DLC
Gryphon has taken a bold step forward by introducing the Black Diamond DLC cartridge, the first Gryphon cartridge ever designed. Partnering with Ortofon, the world’s leading and most innovative cartridge manufacturer, was a natural choice. As Gryphon Audio Designs approaches its 40th anniversary, entering the realm of turntables and cartridges marks a significant milestone. Gryphon has long been celebrated for its phono preamplifiers, starting with The Head Amp in 1985. This new venture aims to establish Gryphon as the complete manufacturer of high-end audio components.
With the introduction of The Siren Phono Preamplifier, The Apollo Turntable System, and now the Black Diamond DLC cartridge, Gryphon has achieved its goal of becoming a leading manufacturer in Ultra High-End Audio.
While the Black Diamond DLC is rooted in Ortofon’s MC Diamond, it is much more than a rebranded product. An engineering team of eight at Ortofon, along with external partners, took the MC Diamond to the next level. The SLM Titanium body of the Black Diamond DLC is coated with DLC-TR to enhance damping and eliminate unwanted resonances at twice the speed. Gryphon partnered with the Danish Technical Institute for the DLC-TR Coating.
Key enhancements include:
• Coil Wire: Upgraded from copper to gold-plated copper for improved conductivity and performance.
• Coil Setup: A newly developed 6-layer coil configuration with 2 x 84 windings per channel, providing superior signal quality.
• Rubber Bearings: Upgraded front and rear rubber bearings made from a newly developed rubber compound for enhanced durability and performance.
• Mechanical Tension: Updated and optimized mechanical tension of the generating system to complement the new bearings, coil setup, and materials, ensuring peak performance and reliability.
• DLC Coating: Increases sound and resonance transmission speed from 9,000 m/s to 18,000 m/s.
These comprehensive upgrades significantly enhance audio fidelity and product longevity, setting a new standard for music reproduction in Ultra High-End Systems.
